College-for-all Approach is Indefensible and Wrong, says Harvard study

A new report out of Harvard is nothing less than a call to arms in support of community colleges and career-technical education programs.

America has the highest college dropout rate in the industrialized world, the report says, and one reason is that we’ve adopted a “college for all” mantra that is doomed to failure.

Instead, the U.S. should get a clue from European countries, which give their teenagers more educational options.

“It is no longer defensible for the U.S. to behave as it if has nothing to learn from other countries” when it comes to secondary and post-secondary education, says the report by Harvard’s Pathways to Prosperity project, which was released last week.

“It is hardly an accident that most nations with superior attainment rates offer more diverse, robust pathways to careers and practical-minded post-secondary options than we do in the U.S.”
