College Officials Ask Congress to Roll Back New Education Department Rules

College administrators want members of the House Subcommittee on Higher Education & Workforce Training to overturn new Department of Education regulations that they believe are overreaching, they said at a hearing here Friday.

The regulations, which were finalized in October and take effect in July, would require states to follow new federal guidelines in authorizing colleges to operate within their borders, and create a federal definition of a credit hour.

According to the Education Department, the measures are necessary to protect students and taxpayers from fraud and abuse and prevent colleges from inflating credit hours to qualify for more federal aid.

But college officials say those requirements would limit academic freedom and come at an unreasonable cost to institutions, especially those specializing in distance learning.
