Six Dominate Reputation Rankings

Six American and United Kingdom universities are in a super league of their own when it comes to reputation, according to an invitation-only survey of more than 13,000 academics in 131 countries.

The first Times Higher Education World Reputation Rankings, published this week, lists the top six as: Harvard University; Massachusetts Institute of Technology; the University of Cambridge; the University of California, Berkeley; Stanford University; and the University of Oxford.

The survey was conducted by Ipsos Media CT for THE ranking partner Thomson Reuters.

Simon Pratt, project manager for institutional research at Thomson Reuters, told THE magazine that reputational measures are “highly skewed”, with the top universities getting multiples of the responses that universities lower down the table receive.

He said the data showed “a significant difference in the reputational standing of the top six, with a drop in the number of responses below that level”.
